In this special episode of ‘On the Road’, Linda Jacques, Partner in the Marine, Shipping and Logistics team at Lester Aldridge in the United Kingdom, discussed the implications and challenges that maritime operators are facing when choosing fuel for maritime transport.
Ms Jacques analysed, in particular, the response of maritime operators to the energy transition. For smaller vessels, the trend is towards electrification and hydrogen, with batteries being used as a temporary alternative. For larger ships, however, the market is more complex, with LNG, methanol, ammonia, hydrogen and biofuels competing as temporary fuels to avoid the use of heavy fuel oil.
Despite international and EU pressure from the IMO and the presence of the ETS (cap and trade) system, there is still no single strategy or guidelines that allow operators to choose independently and consciously the most sustainable fuel for their vessels.
In this regard, the guest hopes to see an enhancement of the technical experience and training of operators in the sector in the use of alternative fuels, recognising that the maritime sector will have to prepare itself by increasing the technical skills and training of its crew.
