On November 24, 2023, China announced a unilateral visa exemption for citizens holding ordinary passports issued by six countries, with the main objective of stimulating tourism recovery.

After three years of national border closure, China has for the past few months been undertaking various initiatives to re-establish the regular flow of passengers entering and leaving the country. In particular, the initiatives concerned the issuance resumption of all types of passports and, recently, the removal of the obligation of anti-Covid test and customs declaration for those entering China.

In order to stimulate the recovery of tourism, a sector that has been severely affected by border closure, China announced a unilateral visa exemption for citizens holding ordinary passports issued by six countries, namely Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia. Specifically, the initiative will apply to citizens travelling to China for business, tourism or transit for a period not exceeding 15 days.

The exemption will take effect from 1 December 2023 until 30 November 2024.
